Keeping Politics Positive

I try not to look back. Elections are about the future. But, I can’t help but think back to one year ago today. I had the privilege of sitting down with Hillary Clinton for almost an hour. She listened to me and Carl DeMatteo talk about concerns and issues people live with every day in our small area of the world; and she really listened. I’ve been lucky over the past decade or so to get to know Hillary a little better than most people. And, on this day, I’d like to say how proud I am to have worked on her two campaigns. I did my small part to try and help elect the most qualified person – in so many ways – to become leader of the free world. But that was not to be. Did she make mistakes- of course she did – as does every candidate, and human being, for that matter. But, the relentless lies, smears and hatred directed at her, and reinforced by the mainstream and other media, distorted her message and drowned out her progressive policy proposals.
As Steward Stefan said, “The next time someone tries to tell you Hillary was a weak candidate, remind them it took the RNC, Wikileaks, the FBI, and Russia to narrowly bring her down in an election she won by nearly 3 million votes.”
As a potential president, she was the whole package: smart, strong, passionate, hard-working, pragmatic, empathetic and kind. She has worked tirelessly for women, children, families and those with no voice. The fact she was a woman was icing on the cake for many of us. To elect the most qualified person in this country and to have it be a woman, would have been a dream fulfilled for many of us.
I am saddened by the calls for Hillary and her supporters to go away and fade into the woodwork. As a longtime champion of those with no voice, a former First Lady, former Secretary of State, former US Senator and the first female presidential candidate for a major political party, she has earned the right to be part of the national dialogue, as does her hard-working, dedicated supporters
who have long toiled in the Democratic arena.
I want to thank Hillary Clinton personally – as an American, as a Democrat, and as a woman – for having taken on that huge responsibility. Life has not always been kind to her. She has taken so many hits; some have probably brought her to her knees. But, she always gets up and stands head and shoulders above those so focused on destroying her.
Hillary once said, “Human rights are women’s rights and women’s rights are human rights, once and for all. And among those rights are the right to speak freely and the right to be heard.” I look forward to watching the next chapter of her life unfold.
Thank you for taking the time to read this. It means a lot to me. But, Please keep any negative comments off my page. Today, let me honor one of my heroes.
