Voter Information for College Students

VOTING  INFORMATION  FOR  COLLEGE  STUDENTS DURING THE 2018 ELECTION

 

To vote in New Hampshire, you must:

  • be a U.S. citizen, 18 years old or older

 

  • registertovotewiththeTown/CityClerkorSupervisorsoftheChecklistupto6-13daysbeforethe election, or at the polls on ElectionDay

 

  • be domiciled in the town or in the ward of the city where you are registering tovote

 

Tips to make registering and voting easier:

 

  • RegistertovotewiththeTownClerkupto6-13daysbeforetheelection(“black-outperiod”willvary with elections). It will take more time if you wait until Election Day to register at the

 

  • When registering to vote, ifyoucan,bringdocuments proving your identity (e.g., driver’s license, other photo ID, or passport), your citizenship (e.g., passport or birth certificate), and age (e.g., driver’s license or passport). Ifyoudon’thavethesedocuments,youmaysigna formstatingyouridentity,citizenship, and

 

  • When registering to vote, alsobring something that shows where you live, such as (i) a document from your school showing your name and address, (ii) a lease (iii) a written statement from a person listed on your lease if your name is not on your lease, (iv) a driver’s license, car registration, or gov’t ID with your name and address, (v) a utility bill with your name and address. or (vi) mail at the address addressed to you. If you don’t have proof of where you live when registering on election day, you can still vote, but you will indicate on the registration form that you will provide this documentation showing where you live (if you have this documentation) within 10 or 30 days of election-day.

 

  • When voting onElectionDay,bringaphotoIDsuchasadriver’slicenseorstudentIDtotheIfyoudon’thave a photo ID, you may sign an affidavit saying you are who you claim to be and vote. Your ballot will be counted on Election Day with all theothers even if you don’t have ID and sign the form.

 

Common questions from out-of-state students going to school in NH:

 

Will registering to vote in New Hampshire affect my federal financial aid or any scholarships I have?

  • Federal financial aid such as Pell Grants, Perkins and Stafford loans, PLUS, SEOG and Federal work study will not be affected. Your dependency status regarding FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) will not be affected. If your scholarship is not a federal one, you can check with the state, county, town or private entity which awarded you the scholarship.

 

Will registering to vote in New Hampshire prevent my parents from claiming me as a dependent on their taxes?

  • It will not affect your parents’ taxes.

 

Will registering to vote in New Hampshire affect my tuition?

  • It shouldn’t. The University system will still consider you an out-of-state student as will most other schools. Check with your school’s registrar if you’re not sure.

 

Will registering to vote in New Hampshire affect my driver’s license or car registration?

 

  • Your right to vote has nothing to do with your driving status or whether you own a
